Lowell Tonding Obituary

Lowell Carlyle Tonding passed away on Wednesday, September 23, 2020 at the Missouri Veteran’s Home in St. James, Mo. He was 89 years, 9 months, and 21 days of age.

 Lowell Carlyle Tonding was born on December 2, 1930 to his parents Lauritz and Jesse Tonding in Austin, Minnesota. Lowell was united in marriage to Bette Lou Katzung on April 13, 1952 in Albert Lea, Minnesota.

 Lowell Carlyle Tonding is survived by two sons: Louis Tonding and wife, Judy of Robertsville, Missouri and Mark Tonding and wife, Janet of Valley Park, Missouri; daughter: Susan Kay Tonding and Rob of St. Louis, Missouri. He is survived by 4 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren: grandchildren: David Rhodes, Patty Lipford and husband Burk, Nicole Lynn Hull and husband Brad, Tara Tonding and Ralph and great-grandchildren: Julian Lipford, Hanna Schonlau, Brandon Rhodes, Luke Rhodes, Sawyer Lipford, and unborn twins due in November 2020.

 Lowell Carlyle Tonding is preceded in death by his wife: Bette Lou Tonding; parents: Lauritz and Jesse Tonding; one brother: Alan Tonding; grandson: Lance Tonding; and great grandson: Izayah Schonlau.

 Lowell Tonding lived a full life as a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He entered the United States Air Force immediately following high school and after became a pipefitter with the Pipefitters Local 562 in St. Louis, Missouri; he was a Methodist Minister in Newburg, Missouri, and an Alderman in St. James, Missouri. In retirement Lowell enjoyed spending time with family on his farm, traveling with Bette, flying his Luscombe airplane, and attending auctions. It is at these auctions that he obtained the many toys he enjoyed playing with: tractors, a King Midget car, and so many more. He also enjoyed volunteering in the community, particularly at the Boys and Girls Club in St. James, Missouri and taking part in town parades as a Korean War Veteran. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

  A grave side funeral service with Full Military Honors will be conducted on 11:00 AM Friday, October 2, 2020 at the St. James Cemetery in St. James, Missouri.
