Obituary

Johnny Lee Snodgrass of St. James passed away Wednesday, June 14, 2023 at the Missouri Veteran’s Home in St. James, MO. He was 75 years of age.

John, the son of the late James Lloyd and Martha Louise Drewel Snodgrass, was born April 8, 1948 in Washington, MO.

He was united in marriage to Janet Jean Wilkinson for 25 years; she was the mother of Sherri and John Lawrence.

On June 19, 1993, he was united in marriage to Tamara Fischer in St. James, MO.

John is survived by his wife, Tammy of St. James, MO; two sons, Jacob Snodgrass and wife, Amy of Vichy, MO and John Lawrence Snodgrass and wife, Heather Ann of Scott City, MO; and daughter, Sherri Cornick and husband,  Michael of Steelville, MO; two brothers, Daniel Snodgrass and wife, Summer of Nixa, MO and Timothy Snodgrass of Steelville, MO; four grandchildren:  Andrew Cornick, Taylor Conaway (Daulton), Oliver Snodgrass, and Ellis Snodgrass; great granddaughter, Evangeline Cornick; and great grandson on the way, Rutledge Conaway.

He is preceded in death by his parents and infant brother, Lester Paul Snodgrass.

John cherished spending time with his family. He loved the many camping, fishing and hunting trips. He especially enjoyed fishing at the Lake of the Ozarks and Pomme de Terre Lake. He was an avid angler. He enjoyed fly fishing, and he also liked to tie his own flies.  He built flint lock black powder rifles, and he participated in competitions with them. John loved doing historic pre-1820 re-enactments that included rifle matches, tomahawk throwing and authentic clothing and camping equipment. He looked forward to each deer season whether it was rifle or bow season. As much as he loved the sport of hunting, he also enjoyed hiking through the woods and capturing God’s beauty with his camera. He was an avid model train hobbyist and loved working on his layout.

Johnny started his adventures into the world by joining the U.S. Air Force in 1966 where he served in the Communication Corps as a lineman. His job with the USAF took him across the Atlantic to Italy, Libya, Spain, Italy, England, and Germany. During his time in service he received the National Defense Service Medal and Air Force Good Conduct Medal. Along with a honorable discharge in 1969. These adventures gave him incredible stories that he enjoyed to share with loved ones.

After more than 25 years at Brown Shoe in Steelville, he went back to school in his mid-40s and received an Associates degree in machine tool from Linn Technical and graduated with honors. He was extremely proud of this accomplishment.

He was a tool and die worker for Complete Tool & Die; he worked as a machinist building motors for Briggs & Stratton. Later he worked at  Cohen Architectural Woodworking and retired from there in 2012.

John valued his family and friends above anything and brought joy and laughter anywhere he went.
