Obituary

Jackson Wesley Asher of St. James passed away Saturday, May 6, 2023, at his home in St. James. He was 91 years, 5 months, and 7 days of age.

Jackson, the son of the late Henry Preston Asher and Girtie Luvinia Stricklin Asher, was born November 29, 1931 in Bixby, MO.

Jackson, known as Jack to his close friends and family, graduated from Caledonia High School in May of 1952. During the Korean War, Jack proudly served in the United States Army from July 1952 until June of 1954. Jack was in the Army Reserves until August of 1960, when he was honorably discharged.

On July 26, 1958, in Salem, MO, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Ruth Wayne Ness.  To this union three children were born.

Jack is survived by his wife, Ruth, of 64 years. He is also survived by his son, Kenneth Wayne Asher, and his two daughters: Nina Eickhorst and significant other Doug Davis, along with Ginger Thompson and her husband, Michael. Jack is lovingly remembered by his two grandchildren: Jackie and her husband, Jeremy, as well as Ethan and his wife, Alisha. He also leaves behind a great-granddaughter, Haddy Jo. Additionally, Jack is survived by his two brothers: Emmett Asher and Vernon Asher, along with Vernon's wife, Mary Lou, as well as his two sisters: Goldie Keister and Helen Walz. Jack is also fondly remembered by numerous nieces and nephews.

Jack is preceded in death by parents, Henry Asher and Girtie Asher; father-in-law, Wayne Ness; mother-in-law, Mary Ness; two brothers: Herman Asher and Montie Asher; two sisters: Mabel Asher and Vernie Asher; two sisters-in-law: Brenda Asher and Linda Asher; and two brothers-in-law: Stanley Ness and Gary Ness.

Jack moved to St. James, MO in 1965. Jack worked at several area businesses during his career: Page Sportswear for 7 years, Maramec Springs Park for 3 years, Boys Town of Missouri for 7 years, and the City of St. James for 15 years. He retired from the City of St. James.

He was baptized on January 26, 1985; he was a member of the First Assembly of God.

Jack loved spending time with his family, especially spoiling his grandchildren. Jack and his grandson, Ethan, would walk to town every Wednesday to watch the trains. They would wait patiently nearby on a bench and motion for the train’s engineer to blow the train’s horn. When his great-granddaughter, Haddy, came along, she held a most special place in his eyes. Jack loved his farm and spent many years raising cows, planting a garden, and riding and raising horses. Valuing the ability to drive a standard vehicle, he made sure that he taught all of his children and grandchildren this important skill.
