Donald Hughes Obituary

Donald E. Hughes of St. James passed away quietly at his home in St James on Friday evening April 30, 2021. He was 81 years of age.

 

Don Hughes was born in Hinkle, MO, on May 29, 1939, the son of the late Louis H. and Ollie Rae Laycock Hughes Jr.

 

On August 15, 1959, in St. James, he was married to the love of his life Ms. Artie Mae Light.

 

He is survived by his beloved wife Artie Hughes, of St. James, one son Keith Hughes and his wife Debbie of St. James, MO. Daughter; Kelly Hughes and her husband Tracy of Cuba, MO; Brothers, George Hughes of Rolla, Charles Hughes of St. James, and Harold Hughes of Rolla, MO. Sisters, Alice Isgrigg of Steelville, MO, and Irene Taylor of Springfield, MO, five Grandchildren:  Amy Guthrey, Aaron Hughes, David Hughes, Marilyn Arnold, and Robert Hughes, along with 8 great-grandchildren.

 

Don worked a route job for various potato chip companies for over 40 years. He loved his family and grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved to joke and tease people. He was a kind-hearted person who enjoyed working and feeding his cattle. Don hardly ever missed a Sunday at Church. He was a Gideon and supported spreading the Gospel of Christ. Artie and Don enjoyed over 60 years of marriage and set an example of how a Christian couple should be. He will be sadly missed.

 

Don Hughes is preceded in death by his parents, along with two brothers Audrey Hughes and Louis Hughes and sister Karen Rodgers.

 

Don Hughes will lie in state Monday from 6-8 p.m. May 3, 2021, at the Jones Funeral Home in St. James, MO.

 

Funeral Service will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 4, 2021, at the Jones Funeral Home in St. James with Don Carson officiating. Linda Spurgeon will play and sing Precious Lord Take My Hand and How Great Thou Art. Pallbearers will be Jeff Jones, Aaron Hughes, David Hughes, Robert Hughes, James Guthrey, and Billy Arnold. Memorials are suggested to the First Church of God in St. James. Burial will be at the Hughes Cemetery in St. James.
