Obituary

William Eugene "Bill" Shrum, Sr. passed away quietly on May 17th 2025, at the Aurora Health and Rehabilitation Center in Rolla, MO. He was 77 years of age.

Bill was known by his family and friends, was born January 2, 1948 in Hannibal, MO to Robert L'Vere Thelkeld and Helen Eugene (Lowe) Thelkeld Shrum.

He was raised by his mother and stepfather, Jasper C Shrum Sr.

He had four brothers, Rocky Shrum (Pat) of Hannibal, Missouri, Jasper C. Shrum Jr. Nam. of California. Paul David Shrum (Debbie) , Macon, Missouri, and Shaun A. Shrum (Tammy) and one sister, Elena Michele (Shrum) Ponder (Cole) of Saint James, MO.

Bill was born and raised in the rural beauty of Rensselaer, Missouri, where his love for the outdoors blossomed. He cherished the simple pleasures of life, finding immense satisfaction in working alongside farmers, reveling in the fresh air and the rhythm of rural life. His competitive spirit shone through in a memorable strawberry-picking contest with his sister, where it was famously reported that he consumed more berries than he managed to collect!

His passion for the outdoors extended to his favorite pastime: fishing. Many happy hours were spent by the water, enjoying the tranquility of nature early in Bill's life.

Bill graduated from Monroe City High School in Missouri on May 18, 1967, a milestone that marked the beginning of a new chapter. Bill accepted Christ when he was 9 years old, and he was baptized at the Solid Rock Baptist Church in Rensselaer, Missouri. Shortly after graduation, he proudly served his country by enlisting in the United States Army, demonstrating his commitment and dedication.

He was stationed in Korea, where he met and married. Chae Sun Sik. (After she became a United States Citizen, she changed her name to Sarah Chae Shrum). They had two children, one son, William E. Shrum Sr., (Tina), and daughter, Lisa Michele Shrum (Smith). He came back to the States in 1972 and divorced in 1982. After his discharge from the army, he worked at  Anheuser-Busch and East Central College as a janitor. He was a member in several American Legions and VFWs, one was VFW Post 56O8 in St James. He was a captain of the color guard for several years.

He is proceeded in death by his mother, father, brothers, Rocky and Jasper Shrum Jr., a brother-in-law, Cole Ponder, and a great-grandson Kai Smith.

He leaves behind two children, five grandchildren: Ethan Shrum, Joseph Shrum, Nikki Lynn Shrum(Cody), Keifer Wayne Smith(DeAzhane), Makenna Hope Smith (Anthony). Great Grandchildren: Remington, Keighan, Brileigh, Asher, Kynslee, Audriana, Keifer Jr., and (Kolson). He was baptized in faith, and he was proud and honored to serve his country.

Visitation will be at 10:00 am, Thursday, May 22, 2025 at the Jones Funeral Home in St. James, Missouri.

Celebration of Life will be at 11:00 am, Thursday, May 22, 2025, with Brother Stephen Brubaker officiating. William's favorite songs were played for his service. Military Honors were presented by the United States Army Funeral Honors Program. Flag Line was provided by the South Central Patriot Guard. Burial of his ashes will be held at a later date. Memorials may be given to the Patriot Guard Riders.
