Obituary

Vernon Anthony Salter Jr. of St. James Missouri passed away peacefully surrounded by family Sunday March 15, 2026 at Phelps Health in Rolla. He was 80 years of age.

He was born June 27, 1945 in Stratford-on-Avon, England after the close of World War II to Vernon Salter Sr. and Ann (Collins) Salter. He was united in marriage to Kathy (McDermott) Salter for 58 years.

Vernon is survived by wife Kathy and 3 sons: Michael and wife Cyndi of St James MO, John of Lee's Summit MO, and Joseph and wife Heidi of Ashland MO.; brother Paul Salter of St. Louis MO; and 4 grandchildren; Zack, Dylan (Katlyn), Hanna and Emma.

He is preceded in death by his parents and younger brother Andy.

He earned his undergraduate degree in Education at Harris Teachers College and his Master of Education from Webster University in St. Louis through the GI Bill.

From 1969 to 1971, Vernon served in the United States Army with the 101st Airborne Division, attaining the rank of Sergeant. He saw combat and was awarded the Bronze Star during the Vietnam conflict.

Prior to being drafted into the Army, he taught Junior High science at Hazlewood in St. Louis. Upon returning from the service, he returned to St. James the community that he loved. He spent 36 years working for the Boys Town organization, helping to improve the lives of disadvantaged kids.

Vernon enjoyed life on his farm, raising cattle, making hay, and fixing the equipment. He enjoyed many hobbies including flying his ultralight airplane, riding his motorcycle, and strumming on his guitar.

A celebration of life service will be held at the Nelson Hart community center on Saturday June 27th 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM.

He will be dearly missed by family and friends.
