Stephen R. "Steve" Durbin, 80, of Sullivan, passed away at 4:18 a.m. Sunday, October 5, 2025, in Aspen Creek of Sullivan.
Steve was born November 29, 1944, in Decatur, Illinois, the son of Stephen R. Durbin, Jr. and Eileen (Bell) Durbin-Ayres. He was a U.S. Navy veteran who proudly served during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, he retired from the Taylorville Correctional Center, where he served as a Corrections Food Service Supervisor with the Illinois Department of Corrections. Steve married Wilma Spencer on March 29, 2014, in Taylorville, Illinois.
Steve was known for his generosity, humility, and quiet strength. He believed in sharing what he had with others and often helped family, supported local causes, or surprised servers with generous tips. He valued hard work, lived simply, and found joy in giving more than receiving.
Survivors include his wife Wilma of Sullivan; son Josh (Aubrey) Durbin of Manhattan, Kansas; stepson Cuyler (Natalie) Robinson of LaGrange, Illinois; granddaughter Skianna (Devin) Anglen of Centralia, Illinois; grandchildren Addison, Max, and Masen Durbin all of Manhattan, Kansas; step-grandchildren Henry, Grant, and Lucas Robinson all of LaGrange, Illinois; sisters Teresa Cure of Kansas City, Missouri, and Judy (Mike) Schanta of St. James, Missouri; and brother Dr. Ron (Aina) Durbin of Rolla, Missouri. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son Travis Durbin, brother Frank Durbin, and sister Verna Iklil.
Graveside service with Full Military Honors will be 2:30 PM Saturday, October 18, 2025 at Asher Cemetery in St. James, Missouri.
Local arrangements are under the direction of Jones Funeral Home in St. James, Missouri.
