Rose Horton, of St. James, Missouri passed away on May 7, 2026, at University Hospital in Columbia, Missouri, after suffering a severe stroke. Born on December 1, 1944, in St. Louis, Missouri, the daughter of the late Nick and Dorothy Johnson Messmer. Rose's life was marked by her enduring spirit, strong personality, and deep love for those around her.
Rose grew up in Valley Park, Missouri, near St. Louis, where she attended school and was raised among thirteen siblings. This bustling family environment shaped her distinctive character—some described her as strong-headed, yet always good-hearted. She had a way of firmly guiding others to find their space, yet beneath this exterior was a tender heart, especially evident in her care and affection for children. Those who knew Rose remember how she made children feel loved and valued.
Her career in sales spanned many years, most notably with Rothmans Furniture in St. Louis, Missouri. In her earlier years, she worked with McCluskie's Textile Factory in St. Louis, demonstrating a lifelong dedication to her work and the community she served.
A passionate collector, Rose found joy in her unique hobby of gathering teapots, a treasured collection she generously shared with others, reflecting her giving nature.
Among her proudest accomplishments was the joy and fulfillment she found in the companionship of her dear niece, Cammie McAllister, and Cammie's family. Rose considered Cammie's children, Jessica Moreland and Randy Schmidt, and grandchildren—Seth, Preston, and Macy—as her closest family, forming bonds that brought warmth and love into her later years. She affectionately referred to Cammie's husband as "Big Mack," often offering him words of wisdom borne from a life well-lived.
Rose is survived by her daughter, Dorothy DeClue of Jacksonville, Florida; her dear loving niece, Cammie McAllister of St. James, Missouri; and grandchildren Jessicia Ramsey, Stephanie Flemings, Abby Sparks, as well as one great-grandchild, Alexa. Brothers and sisters:, Mike Messmer, Nick Messmer, Raymond Messmer, George Messmer, Joe Messmer along with Debbie Fink, Elaine Reed, and Ann Scales. They carry forward her legacy of love, resilience, and kindness.
She is preceded in death by her son, Chris DeClue; brothers Calvin Johnson, Fred Johnson, John Messmer, and Pete Messmer; and sisters Dorothy Sue Messmer,
Rose Horton will lie in state on May 14, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, followed by the funeral service beginning at 6:00 PM., Stephen Brubaker will officiate the service. Rose's favorite hymns were played for her service.
Rose Horton's memory will endure in the hearts of all who knew her—a woman of strength and tenderness, whose genuine love for family left an indelible mark. She will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever cherished.
