Obituary

Phyllis Ann Hollingsworth, of St. James, was born in Vienna on August 2, 1942 to the late Charles & Virgie Alvena Huston. She entered into rest surrounded by her family on August 16, 2022.

She is survived by her 3 children, 4 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren daughter, Debbie Schwaller; sons, Roger Hollingsworth and Dale Hollingsworth (Janine); granddaughters: Kayci, Megan, Rachel (David) and Jessica; and great grandchildren: Avery, Ilse and Margaret.

She will be greatly missed by her surviving family which includes her brothers, Jim (Shirley) and Don (Denise) and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, George (Blanche) Huston, & infant brother Edward Huston.

Her life's work had been about the care and equality for everyone and advocating for persons with developmental disabilities. She had a heart of compassion and has cared for many family members and members of the local community.

Phyllis devoted her life to and had a gift of care and concern for others and truly had a servant's heart. She spent many years working at various healthcare facilities, including the Rolla Diagnostic Center, Missouri Baptist Sullivan Hospital, and Missouri Veterans Home in St. James, where for several years, she provided loving care to our veterans. She was most proud of her 24 years as a personal care giver for the late Gary Stevens of Rolla, MO.  Phyllis and Gary traveled the country fighting for the rights of the disabled. Together they made a difference advocating for independent living and the rights of people with disabilities and spent countless hours making many trips to the state capitol meeting with legislators. Phyllis also served on the board for the Tri-County Center for Independent Living and with the People First organization.  Her many years of selfless service was recognized by numerous organizations serving the disabled. Her declining health may have forced  her to retire, but she still had a heart to serve others.

She attended school in Vienna and was a graduate of Metro Business College. She loved her Lord and Savior Jesus and was a member of the Liberty Church of Christ in Belle and in recent years the St. James Church of Christ.

She loved and enjoyed time with her family, especially calls and visits with her brothers, Don and Jim.  In her retirement she became an avid sports fan and loved to watch her beloved St. Louis Cardinals. She enjoyed spending her mornings outside with a good western or listening to the country classics.
