Melissa "Mitzi" Birkner passed away Saturday morning September 8, 2018 at her home in St. James. She was 55 years of age.

Mitzi was born February 3, 1963 in St. Louis the daughter of Charles L. "Chuck" and Dolores "Dee" Macovey Miller.

She was united in marriage to Robert Birkner on October 20, 2006 at Steelville, Mo.

Mitzi is survived by her mother: Dee Miller of Rolla, MO, husband: Bob Birkner of St. James, MO, daughter: Jamie Neidert-Gilmore & husband Jason Gilmore of Clinton, Mo. Sisters: Mary Beth Stroup of St. James, MO,  Becky and Brian Abbott of New Haven, Mo., Brothers: Chuck Jr. & Christi Miller of Olean, Mo.,Billy & Lisa Miller of Salem, MO,, Teddy and Sara Miller of San Antonio, TX. Grandchildren Amie, Jakob, Justin Gilmore of Clinton, Mo.

She is preceaded in death by her father: Chuck L. Miller Sr. May 24, 2017 and Daughter Kati Elizabeth Neidert September 13, 2005, along with brother-in-law: Gene Stroup.

Mitzi was a friend to everyone and never met a stranger. Mitzi enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, family, and friends. She enjoyed and appreciated the simple things in life. Laying out on her deck, swimming in her pool, and reading a good book always put a smile on her face. She had a one of a kind sense of humor, sarcasm, and wit. She loved her career of 36 years in EMS serving her community and caring for others. Always going above and beyond the call. Mitzi worked for many area ambulance services which include St. James Ambulance District, Phelps County Regional Medical Center, North Crawford County Ambulance District, Steelville Ambulance District and Pulaski County Ambulance District. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Mitzi will lie in state Tuesday September 11, 2018 from 4-8 p.m. at the Jones Funeral Home in St. James.

Funeral Services will be conducted Wednesday September 12, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Assembly Church of God in St. James. Mitzi's brothers Billy  and Chuck Miller will officiate the service. Memorial are suggested to the Grandkids College Fund. Pallbearers will be Tony Blue, Eric Ray, Loren Wilson, Eric Chandler, Tommy Mounce, Gary Griggs. Honorary Pallbearers: Rick Birkner and Bill Patt.  Burial will be in the family plot at the St. James Cemetery.
