Martha Elizabeth Spurgeon Sewell was born on March 20, 1916 to Galloway Spurgeon and Clara Alice Ferris Spurgeon. She passed away on June 1, 2015 at the age of 99 years.
Martha grew up near the Royal Community in northern Phelps County along with 5 brothers and 3 sisters. She married her husband Marshall Sewell in 1938 and lived near St. James for a few years, but moved to Rolla in 1955. She was part of the original group who started meeting as the Church of Christ in St. James, Mo. in the late 1940's and had been a member of that congregation since that time. She worked for the County Welfare Office for a couple of years but began to work for Rolla Motor Parts in 1953 and continued there as bookkeeper for the 28 years. She retired in 1981.
Martha is survived by her daughter: Sharon Sewell of Rolla; a son: Norman Sewell and wife Jo Ann of Harrison, AR.; 3 grandchildren, Mark of Springfield, Bryan of Nixa, Mo. and Melissa Sewell Taber of St. James, Mo.; 7 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters: Allene Goers of Higginsville, Mo., and Clara Harvey of Kansas City, Mo.; and one bother, Galloway of the Royal Community near St. James, and a great number of nieces, nephews and friends. Martha will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Preceding Martha Sewell in death is her parents, her husband Marshall, brothers: Leslie, Oral, Charles, and Allen; and one sister Ethel Plemmons of St. James.
Services
Visitation for Martha Sewell will be held on Thursday, June 4, 2015 from 6 - 8 P.M. at the Jones Funeral Home in St. James, Mo.
Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, June 5, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. at the Jones Funeral Home in St. James, Mo. with Lynn Huggins officiating. Pallbearers will be: Mark Sewell, Bryan Sewell, Austin Sewell, Nathan Sewell, Jordan Sewell, and Brandon Tabor. Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery in rural St. James.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Hospice Foundation of Phelps County.
All arrangements are under the direction of the Jones Funeral Home in St. James, Mo.
