Obituary

Laverne "Eddie" Gabel, a lifelong resident of Phelps County, Missouri, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at his home in St. James on May 13, 2026. Born on January 17, 1933, in Phelps County, Mr. Gabel devoted his life to farming, family, and community service, leaving behind a legacy marked by dedication, kindness, and unwavering support for those around him.

Raised on a farm near Mill Creek, Eddie took great pride in carrying on the family tradition when he took over his father's farm. He was a skilled and passionate farmer, raising dairy cattle as well as Angus and Herefords. In the early years of his career, he ground his own feed, growing corn and wheat with meticulous care. His love for the land and agriculture was only rivaled by his devotion to his family and community.

A graduate of Newburg High School, he exemplified a life of hard work grounded in simple values. Alongside his beloved wife Josephine, to whom he was married for over 70 years, he volunteered side by side at the St. James Caring Center for more than 18 years, embodying a spirit of generosity and compassion that touched many lives. Together, they also shared the joy of raising a large garden each year, delighting in sharing its bounty with friends and neighbors.

Known for his warm and supportive nature, Eddie was a man who loved people deeply. His personality shone through in his devotion to family—welcoming moments spent on road trips and treasured times with his cherished cat, Parker, who was truly his best buddy.

Beyond his accomplishments in agriculture, Mr. Gabel was deeply committed to serving his community in various capacities. He dedicated his time to boards such as the ASCS, Phelps County Housing Board, and Gasconade Electric, always striving to improve the lives of those around him. His faith was an integral part of his life; he attended church faithfully, served as an usher for over three decades, and was a member of Flag Springs Church for six years.

Eddie's passing comes just eight months after the loss of his beloved wife Josephine, a testament to their extraordinary bond and shared journey through life.

He is survived by his daughter, Jane Davis of St. James, Missouri; his son, Paul Gabel of Gassville, Arkansas; grandchildren: Amanda Stirling (John) of Volga, South Dakota, and Andrea Moshier (Derek) of Salem, Missouri; seven great-grandchildren—John Stirling, Riley Stirling, Chase Stirling, Kayla Moshier, Anthony Moshier, Andrew Davis (Taylor), and McKensi Watson (DeShawn); and eleven great-great-grandchildren, who were all touched by his enduring love and generosity.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Laverne E. Gabel Sr. and Anna Madeline (Dunivivan) Gabel; son-in-law, Ed Davis; grandson Skyler Gabel; and granddaughter-in-law, Hannah McDowell.

A visitation will be held in his honor 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM Wednesday, May 20, 2026 at Jones Funeral Home in St. James, Missouri.Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Wednesday, May 20, 2026 with Bro.
