Gary Wayne Engelmeier, of St. James, MO, passed away Tuesday, December 20, 2022. He was 69 years of age. Gary, the son of the late Melvin Engelmeier and Grace (Fanger) Engelmeier, was born Monday, October 19, 1953, in Salina, KS. He was united in marriage to Bonnie Diann Hicks on November 22, 1975 at First Baptist Church in St. James, MO . To this union, two children were born. Gary is survived by his wife Bonnie Engelmeier of St. James, MO; Brian (Renae) Engelmeier and Shelly Engelmeier both of St. James, MO; four grandchildren: Isaac Keller-Engelmeier, Hunter Pitts, Alivia Engelmeier and Lane Engelmeier; sisters Debra and husband Henry Kemnitzer, Donna Adams of Houston, MO; sisters-in-law JoAnn and husband Jimmy Yowell of St. James, MO and Sharon Hicks of Belle, MO; along with other family members and friends. Gary was preceded in death by parents Melvin and Grace Engelmeier; parents-in-law Rainey and Alice (nee Jackson) Hicks; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Charles Hicks, Emmett and wife Leatha, Hicks, Emory Hicks, Dick and wife Charlotte, Hicks, Virginia and husband Vernon, Moreland, Margie and husband Joe, Sullivan, Betty and husband Dewey, Norvell and Francis and husband Tom, Eickhorst. Gary graduated from John F. Hodge High School in St. James, MO. While in school, he played on the very first football team and was given the nickname "Flash". He was an avid athlete that not only played football, basketball and baseball but also coached numerous sports throughout the years, knew stats, remembered old plays and could predict future wins. After high school he attended college in Warrensburg, MO for a short time while he played college baseball and football. He worked for Walmart DC in St. James, MO, was a member of First Baptist Church in St. James and had accepted the Lord as his personal Savior at an early age. Gary was also an outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting and his cows. Most of all, Gary loved being with his family, especially his grandkids. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and community member who will be dearly missed. Visitation is from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM on Friday, December 30, 2022 at Jones Funeral Home, St. James, MO. Funeral Service will immediately follow at 1:00 PM with Pastor Gene Branson officiating. Burial is at St. James Cemetery. Pallbearers are Shawn Steen, Nathan Kemnitzer, Justin Gruver, Lloyd Hicks, Travis Holt and Ryan Bullock. Memorials may be given to the Gary Engelmeier Scholarship Fund. Memorials may be made at funeral home or Phelps County Bank. All arrangements are under the direction of the Jones Funeral Home in St. James, MO.
