Dolores “Dee” Jean (Macovey) Miller was born on February 29, 1940, in Morgantown, West Virginia, to William Thomas Macovey and Mabel Dolores Mueller Macovey.
Dee graduated from St. Theresa’s Academy in 1958. She went on to earn her nursing degree from St. Joseph’s College of Nursing and later received her Associate Degree in Nursing from Belleville Area College. As a testament to her lifelong love of learning, she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Missouri–St. Louis in her 50s.
She married Charles “Chuck” Linwood Miller Sr. on December 28, 1960, after an eight-week courtship. The two eloped to the courthouse in Waterloo, Illinois. Though their romance moved quickly, they had first met as children and later reconnected as teenagers. Dee often joked that Chuck was “a fast mover.”
Dee dedicated her life to caring for others through her nursing career. She helped establish the first skilled care unit at Phelps County Regional Medical Center and retired in 2002 as a Nursing Supervisor. She was a member of the Missouri League for Nursing and Missouri Republican Women.
Dee was never one to shy away from sharing her opinions. A passionate supporter of President Donald Trump, she embraced social media well into her 80s and built a following of more than 4,000 people on X (formerly Twitter). She enjoyed keeping up with current events, engaging in spirited discussions, and connecting with people from across the country. Her family often smiled at the fact that, well into her 80s, she had thousands of followers and proudly supported what she affectionately called “her man,” Donald Trump.
A lifelong learner, Dee enjoyed reading books of all kinds, completing crossword puzzles, and keeping her mind active. She loved Christmas, Hallmark movies, shopping trips, classic country music, Elvis Presley, and especially Freddy Fender. One of her favorite traditions was her Friday night dates with her beloved husband, watching Country Family Reunion together.
Family was at the center of Dee’s life. She was known for teaching those around her to find humor, look for the bright side in every situation, and never miss an opportunity to laugh. She made unforgettable custard, prepared the dressing everyone looked forward to at Thanksgiving, and filled her home with love, warmth, and laughter. Her grandchildren will forever cherish hearing her sing “You Are My Sunshine.”
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles “Chuck” Linwood Miller Sr.; her parents, William Thomas Macovey and Mabel Dolores Mueller Macovey; her siblings, Millie Macovey, David Macovey, and John Paul Macovey, who passed away in infancy; her daughter, Melissa “Mitzi” Birkner; and her grandchildren, Kati and Donovan, and great-great grandson, Colter James Walker.
Dee is survived by her sister, Virginia Macovey Harmon of Belleville, Illinois; her children, Mary Beth Stroup of Sullivan, Missouri; Charles “Chuck” L. Miller and wife Christi of Olean, Missouri; William “Billy” Orville Miller and wife Lisa of Salem, Missouri; Rebecca “Becky” Ellen Abbott and husband Brian of New Haven, Missouri; and Theodore “Teddy” Jason Miller and wife Sara of San Antonio, Texas.
She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren: Amy (Stanley), Brittany (Austin), Dustin (Morgan), Jamie (Jason), Dani, Abby, Ethan, Jacob (Amber), Mackenzie (Adam), Henry, and Vivienne; 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Dee’s legacy lives on in the lessons she taught, the laughter she shared, the lives she touched through nursing, and the family she loved so deeply.
