Obituary

Calvin Eugene (Mac) McIntosh, of St. James, Missouri, formerly of Salem, Missouri, passed away on Tuesday, May 31, 2022, at the Missouri Veterans Home in St. James at the age of 96. Calvin was born in Jake Prairie, Missouri, on March 4, 1926, to the late Benjamin Louis and Mary (Calvin) McIntosh.

Calvin graduated from John F. Hodge High School in St. James, Missouri, in 1943, and left the family farm and entered the Army Air Forces in March of 1944; he served as a top gunner on a B-29 during World War II, eventually attaining the rank of staff sergeant. He flew out of Saipan on bombing missions over Japan; immediately following the Japanese surrender, he flew missions dropping humanitarian supplies into a prisoner of war camps in China abandoned by the Japanese. Following his honorable discharge in March of 1946, he married the love of his life, Mary Frances Gravatt. They married on November 30, 1947, and lived in St. Louis for a time where he worked for the U.S. Postal Service, and later moved to Jackson, Missouri, and later to St. James, Missouri while he was working for Skelly Oil Company. The union was blessed with two children. In 1962, Mac and Mary purchased the furniture and appliance store in Salem, which evolved into a thriving business, also selling carpet, custom draperies, and electronics; they also operated a successful propane business. Calvin also served as an officer and director with the Dent County Fire District, superintending major building expansion. McIntosh Furniture closed in 1988, and following their retirement in Salem, Mac and Mary moved to the St. Louis area for a time, to be closer to family; they celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary in November of 2020, just over a week before Mary died on December 8.
