Joanne Rios Obituary

Joanne Wagner Waterman Rios, aged 67, of Ashburn Virginia passed away at her home on Saturday January 12, 2019 from cancer. She was surrounded by her children and her niece Thuy Shapiro at her passing. She was born on March 15, 1951 on her family farm in Vienna Missouri to Alfred L. Wagner (deceased) and Pauline Leach Wagner.

She had five sisters; Barbara Jean (deceased), Janice, Janell, Janet, Jane, and two brothers Owen and Everett. As a child she attended a small two room school house called Mayflower Elementary. She graduated and went to Maries R1 in Vienna. With a love of learning and adventure she enrolled in the University of Missouri in Columbia Missouri in 1969 to be an elementary teacher. She loved the university life and in 1972 she met Brian Waterman. They were married on June 15, 1972 at The United Methodist Church in Columbia Missouri. From the union they had two children, Mary Christine Gobble and Benjamin Michael Waterman. She received her B.S. in Education in 1973 and her master’s in education in 1977.

Brian and Joanne opened Century Next Computers in Columbia, Missouri in 1980 and owned it until 1985. They moved to St. Louis in 1988, Des Moines Iowa in 1990, and Atlanta in 1991 while Brian was employed with Apple Computers. They returned to Columbia Missouri in 1993 and Brian passed away from cancer on June 29, 1993. Joanne continued to reside in Columbia while her children attended school. She was a manager at the Disney Store and a store manager for Kirlin’s Hallmark.

On May 20, 2002 she married her second husband, Gilbert Urrea Rios in Columbia, MO who had two children from his first marriage with Lorraine Ellison, Michael Albert and Steven. He was recently retired from the military and they moved to Ashburn Virginia for his new career.

Joanne had a passion for family history, loved to travel and meet new people, adored all her grandchildren, was an avid reader, and was a talented gardener. She was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, daughter, aunt, and friend who will be missed by all.

Proceeding her in death: her first husband, Brian E. Waterman; her father, Alfred L. Wagner, and her sister, Barbara.

Those left to mourn her passing are her spouse Gilbert Rios, Ashburn, Virginia; her children Mary Christine and Kevin Gobble of Waleska, Georgia; Benjamin Michael and Devra (Roberts) Waterman of Tecumseh, Oklahoma; her grandchildren Naomi, Breanna, Mikayah, Hannah, Mara, Jonathan Waterman; Lucas and Rowan Gobble; Madison, Marley, Mia Rios; her siblings, nieces, nephews, cousins, sisters and brothers in laws, and friends.


 

Services

Joanne’s visitation will be Wednesday January 23rd from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the United Methodist Church in Vienna Missouri. The Funeral Service will be Thursday January 24th at 11:00 am at United Methodist Church in Vienna Missouri followed by burial services at Rader Cemetery Vienna Missouri.
