Don served in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953.  He attained the rank of corporal and served in the Korean War.  During the war, he managed equipment parts in Korea. It was during his Korean War experience that Don decided to pursue a career in social work.  He later earned a master’s degree in social work at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

In 1956, Don worked as a Juvenile Probation Officer in York, PA.  In 1957, he was employed as a social worker for Catholic Charities in New Orleans, LA.  From 1959-1994, Don worked at Boys Town of Missouri serving as Director of Admissions and Director of Social Services.  He was in charge of Joint Commission Standards and enjoyed participating in the annual Boys Town trail rides to St. Louis.  He worked with and helped 100s of boys during his tenure at Boys Town.

Don had many interests.  He enjoyed sports and particularly loved to cheer for his beloved World Series winning Chicago Cubs.  He was an avid reader of books concerning the Civil War, WWII, and the Korean War.  He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and gardening.  He also enjoyed the music of Elvis Presley and country and western-style singers.  Most of all, Don loved spending time with his family, especially his beloved four granddaughters.
